Hernia operation in Dhaka

Every hernia type, repaired laparoscopically wherever that is the safer route — including recurrent hernias and emergency strangulated hernias.

In plain language

What a hernia is, in plain terms

A hernia is a gap in the muscle wall through which tissue underneath pushes out. That is why it often appears as a swelling that comes up on standing, coughing or lifting, and settles when you lie down.

A hernia does not heal on its own and it does not go away with medicine. It can stay unchanged for years, or it can gradually enlarge. The reason surgeons advise repair is not the swelling itself — it is the risk that a loop of bowel becomes trapped in the gap.

That is the situation to know about. If a hernia becomes firm, painful and will not push back in, especially with vomiting, it needs to be seen the same day.

How it works

From first visit to follow-up

  1. 01

    Examination

Most hernias are diagnosed by examination. An ultrasound is sometimes used to confirm.

  2. 02

    Deciding the timing

Whether it should be repaired now or can wait depends on size, symptoms and risk.

  3. 03

    The repair

TEP or TAPP laparoscopic mesh repair where suitable, or open repair where that is safer.

  4. 04

    Afterwards

Guidance on lifting and activity, and a follow-up to check the repair.

Common questions

Questions patients ask

Anything not covered here, the chamber team can answer by phone.

01 Can a hernia be cured without an operation?

No. A hernia is a physical gap in the muscle wall — no medicine, belt or exercise closes it. A support belt may make it more comfortable, but it does not repair anything.

Treatment
02 Is it dangerous to leave a hernia alone?

Many hernias stay stable for a long time. The concern is strangulation, where a loop of bowel becomes trapped and loses its blood supply. That is an emergency. Whether to repair now or watch is a decision made with you.

Risk
03 When is a hernia an emergency?

If it becomes firm, very painful, will not push back in, or comes with vomiting or a swollen abdomen — go to a hospital the same day rather than waiting for a chamber appointment.

Emergency
04 What is TEP and TAPP?

Two laparoscopic techniques for placing the mesh — TEP works outside the abdominal cavity lining, TAPP through it. Both are keyhole repairs; which suits you depends on the hernia and any previous surgery.

Technique
05 Can a hernia come back after repair?

It can, and that is called a recurrent hernia. It is less common with mesh repair, and recurrent hernias can themselves be repaired.
