What the letters actually mean
Medical degrees are written as initials and almost never explained. Select one to see what it involved.
Sir Salimullah Medical College · Dhaka
The basic medical degree. Five years of study and a year of internship across medicine, surgery, gynaecology and paediatrics before any specialisation begins.
Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons
The postgraduate fellowship in general surgery. Several years of supervised operating, then written, clinical and viva examinations. This is the qualification that makes someone a surgeon rather than a doctor who assists at operations.
Master of Surgery · Surgical Oncology
A further specialist degree in cancer surgery specifically — how tumours spread, which margins matter, when an operation helps and when it does not. It is the difference between a surgeon who can remove a lump and one trained in treating cancer.
Fellow of Minimal Access Surgery
Formal training in laparoscopic — keyhole — surgery. Operating through small ports while watching a screen is a genuinely different skill from open surgery, and it is trained and examined separately.

A large part of why people reach a surgeon late in Bangladesh is not cost or access — it is not knowing which symptoms matter. He posts patient explanations in Bangla for that reason.
Common questions
Before you book
Do I need a referral to see him?
No. You can take a serial directly at either chamber. If another doctor has already investigated you, bring those reports and films — it saves repeating tests.
Does seeing a cancer surgeon mean I have cancer?
No, and most of the time the answer turns out to be something else. A large part of the work is assessing lumps and symptoms properly so that cancer can be ruled out — or found early enough to matter.
Can I be seen in Bangla?
Yes. Consultations run in Bangla or English, whichever you are more comfortable explaining yourself in.
What should I bring to the first visit?
Any scans as actual films or discs rather than only the printed report, previous reports in date order, a list of your current medicines, and your questions written down. The appointment page has the full list.
Which chamber should I choose?
Whichever is easier to reach. Dhanmondi sits Saturday, Monday and Wednesday; North Badda on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. The same surgeon sees you at both.
Can I come for a second opinion?
Yes, and it is a reasonable thing to want before an operation. Bring whatever the first assessment produced — films, biopsy reports, and any plan you were given — so the discussion starts from the same evidence rather than from scratch.
